Le genre pseudoplatystoma a été révisé en 2007 par Buitrago. L'espèce P. fasciatum se retrouve confinée aux Guyannes et c'est P. Punctifer qui est en fait représentée dans toute l'amazonie : Pérou, Bolivie, Colombie et Brésil. Même si la distinction entre P. fasciatum et P. punctifer n'est pas évidente, c'est en général P. punctifer que l'on trouve en aquarium. La reproduction et l'élevage larvaire sont maîtrisés en captivité.
